Agency Spotlight: The MVP Insurance Agency

Featuring Founder, Jim Palmer

By

Founded by motorcycle enthusiast Jim Palmer, The MVP Insurance Agency has built a thriving business on a foundation of personalized service and a deep understanding of its clients’ needs.

Palmer’s philosophy? Relationships matter more than rates.

“We’re selling ourselves, the experience, and the relationship,” Palmer explains. “It starts with our reputation and continues with the service we give,” he adds. With a focus on building relationships rather than just selling policies, MVP has carved a successful niche in the insurance industry.

From bikes to business

Palmer’s path to an insurance career was not a traditional one.

While working at a Harley Davidson dealership, he came to understand the challenges customers faced in securing motorcycle insurance. "We needed to overcome the hurdle of waiting on the insurance provider to finish the deal." This hurdle sparked the idea for MVP, initially an in-house insurance agency that Palmer took with him when he branched out on his own.

Because of this unorthodox start to insurance, Palmer understands the importance of shared experiences and loyalty within communities—like the motorcycle enthusiasts and also finding success catering to veterans. "The loyalty you're going to find in certain groups of life, such as the military and motorcycle worlds; those communities are very loyal," he explains.

This loyalty stems from understanding of the specific needs of these demographics. As a motorcycle rider himself, Palmer leverages his personal experience to connect with clients. "It takes a rider to know a rider," he says. “Being in that world my whole life, I can ensure they’re taken care of the right way.” This authenticity, and creating a sense of shared purpose and trust, has resonated with veterans as well.

This service-first approach is evident throughout the business. From providing personalized attention to ensuring clients understand their coverage, MVP goes the extra mile to meet the needs of their customers, resulting in a loyal customer base—and a reputation for excellence.

Leveraging trust and community

Palmer recalls a moment early in his career: "I took a phone call in 2008 from a prospective client, which resulted in securing a good insurance rate for him. He posted about it online, and it spiraled from there.” To this day he is still reaping the referral benefits of that singular internet post, emphasizing the power of building trust within niche communities, online or in-person.

Building this sense of community extends beyond his client base. Palmer actively participates in online forums to connect with potential clients, a practice that has yielded substantial results, cultivating an online presence that complements the agency's focus on personal relationships and resulted in a comprehensive community-building strategy. “Winning people’s trust online, that’s a little more difficult than if I had a prospective client sitting in my office,” Palmer adds.

Beyond strong connections, Palmer believes in educating clients. He recognizes that true peace of mind comes from understanding one’s insurance coverage. He avoids the “hard-sell” tactics often associated with insurance sales, instead focusing on providing information and guidance. "We appeal with the education piece," he says.

This commitment to transparency ensures that clients are able to make informed decisions about their insurance needs. MVP goes even further by taking a unique approach to explaining insurance. Instead of focusing on complex industry jargon and technical details, Palmer prioritizes clear and concise explanations that focus on how coverage can benefit clients. Palmer explains:

“People have their own preconceived notions as to what the purpose of insurance is. I’m not here to change that. But answering a few questions to make sure the answers match their mindsets can go a long way.”

The power of collaboration

Palmer believes collaboration is the cornerstone of success in the independent insurance agency world. “It’s the perfect time to be an independent agent,” Palmer asserts, before emphasizing the strength of the united agent community. "We've got to rely on each other to get through this, or we're going to lose out.” Sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices not only helps independent agents collectively elevate industry standards, but also better serve clients.

Palmer’s dedication to collaboration is evident in his participation in industry groups like Openly’s Agency Council of Excellence, or ACE. “You don’t want to have to worry about creating relationships every day; you want to build on them.” This collaborative spirit positions Jim as a leader within the independent agent community, paving the way for a future where trust and expertise remain at the forefront of insurance.

A different kind of ride

Palmer's approach to insurance is a refreshing departure from the impersonal, price-driven model that often dominates the industry. “The dollar is almost the last piece. I focus on finding the right fit for clients.” This philosophy stands in stark contrast to the transactional nature of many insurance interactions. Palmer believes that focusing solely on price overlooks the value a knowledgeable and dedicated independent insurance agent can offer.

MVP’s commitment to client satisfaction is rooted in adaptability and expertise. Palmer understands that insurance needs evolve with life’s changes, a reminder that the human element remains a vital ingredient to success. “We’re casting a large net,” Palmer says, emphasizing MVP’s ability to serve clients in 33 states. “We’re going to move with you. Nobody stays in place forever.”

Whether clients are relocating across town, or across the country, MVP is committed to providing seamless coverage transitions—no matter where life takes them.
